Designer Talent - Christine from Organic Boy and Friends
1. What made you decide to be a children's fashion designer?
Love dressing my kids and when my boy hit 3 there was nothing cute anymore. He was still a kid, even a toddler really. Skulls and graffiti were everywhere and some popular brands just seemed to regurgitate the same gear over and over again. - Boring! So I decided it was time to bring out some funky clothing that was all about when we were young. Just like our Tree Swinging T is about kids getting out there in the great outdoors like we used to, climbing trees (who does that anymore?) surprised it's not illegal!
2. What is the best thing about being a children's fashion designer?
It is so amazing to take your ideas and turn it into something. We often hold ourselves back from our dreams in life and being a designer is just that - it gives you the pencil to write 'this is what I'm going to create, this is what we'll be about and these are the ideas we'll take forward and develop.'
3. Take us through your day?
It's crazy really, I don’t know how I have a business of my own. Two kids 5 and under, both ready for school drop off by 8.30, dressed, showered and the rest like all of us have to do. Being in children's clothing I could turn my attention to anything at any one time, from driving to the other side of town to see the factory, sourcing small things like thread, zips, elastic can be such a huge task because hardly anything is produced in Australia anymore. Like there is 1 pink elastic you can get here and that's what we use on our girls undies - funny. Meeting with pattern maker, packing and sending orders. Drafting a brief for web site design to promotional cards. Often asked for photographs for magazines and publications which I find tough because I wouldn’t have a clue about high/low res or image sizes...crazy...sometimes my head spins and other times I get great satisfaction from completing tasks I knew nothing about.
4. What made you choose organic cotton for Organic Boy?
Organic cotton kept coming up every time I searched for fabrics and I just knew if I was going to do something this big, it was going to have to be done properly. Organic Cotton being the best - it had to be for us! We're a brand with a big conscience, we take our attitude towards the environment right through to our packaging in brown Kraft boxes (no bleached white), our recycled card hangers and tags, no fluffing with tissue paper, no plastic. Retailers love that they don’t have to individually unpack each garment and re-press to hang, thus saving energy also. I was so scared to open the first roll of fabric that arrived as it said something like 'Care: contains organic cotton, on opening will be contaminated', or something like that...so I didn’t want to open it!!! Had to actually tell myself that if it doesn’t get out of the package it'll never make it onto the shelves!!! Made me realise its special stuff, my wish is that it becomes better understood and its importance acknowledged.
5. What exciting things do you have planned for Organic Boy?
We've just launched our gorgeous Birds & the Bees baby blankets and extended the sizing in our singlets to babies. So for now we are in transition to really promote our retail outlets like cornflowerblue and grow so that we can export in the near future. The overseas market understands Organic Cotton and its benefits and we want to place ourselves there, while maintaining strong exposure here. We are going to hold back the horns of creation for a little and really test what we have in play. Our range for now will stay at underwear, T's, jeans and baby blankets. In the short term we'd like to increase the size available for our T's as we keep getting enquiries. We'd love to see a change in how the consumer buys their clothing in Australia, so anything we can do to educate people, we'll be involved. Any move away from our throw away cheap cheap culture would be great to see. Everything comes at a cost, it may be cheap on your wallet but why?
